Mine Site Development, Pre-Stripping and Contract Mining

Sea Lifts, Snow-Packed Roads, and Whiteouts

Tercon was contracted in 2003 to ship a small fleet of equipment via ocean freighter from Montreal to Baker Lake. In the winter of 2004, the equipment was transported to site via Delta ATVs or driving over a snow-packed road and frozen lakes.

In 2005, the airstrip was built, followed by the tank farm in 2006. In Winter 2007, site development commenced. Throughout this time, the work continued without any fixed link beyond Baker Lake and only a very short re-supply season from Churchill and Montreal. This project was as much a logistics project as a construction job.

Greenfield Site to Operating Mine

Tercon constructed the mine access road, and performed all pre-development pit works. During the production phase, Tercon contract mined the pit.

Turn-Key Development Project for NEMI

Tercon Construction Ltd. and its sister company, Tercon Industrial Ltd., were awarded a turn-key project to construct the rail loadout and sidings, plant site, coal washing facility and perform the pit pre-development work.

At the completion of construction Tercon Mining TR Ltd. was awarded a five-year contract to perform drilling and blasting, waste removal, coal hauling and rail car loading.

Mass Excavation at Wood Creek

The Wood Creek project included Cat 777 100 ton trucks and 12 to 15 yard mass excavators. In addition to the mass excavation we also were contracted to install drain material and piping.

Development, Creek Diversion and Pipe Installation for Kemess

Tercon was contracted to provide personnel and equipment to perform the mine site development including clearing and grubbing, tailings dam, diversion ditches and haul roads. Total earthworks involved 6 million cubic metres of material.

The pipe installation and diversion of an existing creek at the Kemess mine was also part this $65 million site development project.

West “Tank” Farm Test Fill at the Oilsands

The test fill is designed to simulate foundation loading when a large tank is filled to capacity. Instrumentation was installed in the foundation to measure underlying soil deformation and pore water pressure dissipation during loading.

The wall measures 57m x 57m at the base and reached a height of 9.5m. The wall was designed and monitored by a third party engineer and was built with wire baskets, geogrid and geofabric.

Pre-Stripping and More at Horizon

Through our AC&T First Nations Limited Partnership, we completed numerous projects at the new Horizon site. The pre-stripping and perimeter ditch and emergency dump are examples.

2 Million Metre Excavation at the Oilsands

Tercon in partnership with the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation was awarded and completed the Area 4 Site development work for the CNRL-owned Horizon oilsands facility.

The project involved underground utilities, muskeg removal, ditching, site grading and development of roads and plant site. During the project we excavated 2 million metres of material and supplied and installed 500,000 tonnes of gravel.

Pre-Stripping and Preparation at Steepbank

DCL Construction Ltd., a First Nations Joint Venture, provided contract stripping during the development of the Steepback Mine. The work was completed using Hitatchi Ex-1800 Shovels and Cat777 100 ton haul trucks.

Site Development near Dawson City, Yukon Territories, for Viceroy Resources

Tercon was contracted to perform the site development, including haul roads, pit development, crushing and pit development. This work was completed using a fleet of Cat 773 Haul Trucks, an EX1100 Hitatchi excavator and a Cat D10 and D8 dozers.

Ekati Diamond Mine Pre-Development
